Credit First, Because the Software Is Excellent

ZenBusiness makes the nicest interface in this business. Formation, filing deadlines, and your agent documents all sit inside one account, and the whole thing was clearly designed by people who cared about it. If you want a control panel for the company and the agent role is just one tile on it, that is a legitimate thing to buy, and we do not sell it. We sell one job in one state.

The Number That Repeats Is $199

Buy agent service on its own, not folded into a formation package, and it is $99 plus state fees for the first year. After that it is $199 a year. Both figures are on their site. Nobody is hiding anything.

The trap is just how comparison shopping works. You look at $99, you look at everyone else's annual prices, and the mental note you file away is that ZenBusiness is competitive. Then year two arrives and the note is out of date. Your Maine LLC needs an agent every single year it exists, so the recurring rate is the real one, and the introductory rate is a one-time event you will never see again.

Our Price Has One Setting

$99 a year. That is the renewal too, because we never wrote a second price into the plan. Speed is where the money goes instead: papers served at our Maine office are scanned and posted to your portal the same business day, with the email alert going out as the file uploads, because your response clock started the second the server handed them over. Add our street address covering yours on the public record, plus a reminder before June 1, and that is the entire product.

Are we the cheapest in Maine? No. BetterLegal advertises $90, and we are not going to pretend that number does not exist. We sit among the lowest flat annual rates here, and unlike the column beside us, the figure does not change shape in year two.

What Maine Actually Puts on Your Filing

Worth knowing, because it explains why professional agents exist at all. Maine sorts agents into commercial and noncommercial. The commercial ones put a listing on file under 5 M.R.S. § 106 and then get identified on entity paperwork by name plus a public CRA number, so the state matches you to a known office instead of chasing an address. Noncommercial agents are everyone else, recorded by name and a physical Maine street address, PO boxes not accepted, since somebody has to be standing at a door when process arrives.

Every national brand in this comparison operates inside that same framework. The framework is not what separates them. Price and turnaround are.

Leaving ZenBusiness Before the $199 Lands

Maine keeps this simple and slightly analog. One form, CLK/RA 3, which the state's catalog also spells CLKRA-3. It goes by post to the Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, a unit of the Maine Secretary of State, with $35 attached if you are a for-profit entity, and an LLC is. Ignore the lower figure printed next to it on the form. That rate belongs to Title 13-B nonprofit corporations. Want it handled quickly? $50 gets next-day treatment, $100 gets same-day.

Here is the order, and it is not optional. You cannot vacate the agent seat into thin air. The form demands the name and address of whoever is taking over, so hire first, mail second, check the state record third, and close the ZenBusiness account fourth. Do it backwards and there is a stretch where your Maine LLC has no agent on file, which is the single outcome the whole requirement exists to prevent. Timing suggestion: aim for the month before your renewal date. Nothing in Maine law ties the filing to a calendar, so the only deadline that matters here is the billing one.
