Let us not be silly about LegalZoom. It is the most recognized brand in consumer legal services, it has run at scale for a very long time, and there is genuine comfort in handing a compliance obligation to a company your accountant has heard of. Some owners will pay a premium for that with their eyes open, and that is a defensible purchase.

$249, Automatically, Every Year

Agent service is $249 a year and it renews on its own. We checked for a first-year promotion and found none, which is at least straightforward. No teaser, no step-up, just $249 arriving annually until you stop it.

It is also the highest flat price in our Maine survey. And here is the thing about what that money buys. The job is receiving legal documents at a physical street address in Maine during business hours and getting them to you fast. Maine will not accept a PO box for the role, because process servers need somewhere to hand paper to a person. That requirement lands identically on a $249 agent and a $99 one.

Worth being precise about what the extra $150 does not buy. It does not buy a different legal standard, a longer window to respond, or a Maine address with special standing at the courthouse. Every provider in this market takes delivery of the same envelopes under the same rules. What varies between them is how fast the contents reach you and what next year's invoice says.

What Speed Is Worth in This State

Here is the argument for caring about the agent rather than the logo. Maine does not simply fine an LLC that stops filing. Under 31 M.R.S. § 1667 the Secretary of State can administratively dissolve a company that fails to deliver its annual report, and getting there involves written notice and a chance to put things right. Every one of those warnings goes to your registered agent's address.

So the whole escalation is survivable, provided somebody opens the envelope quickly and puts it in front of you. That is the job, and it is what we optimize for.
