Free Really Is Free, for Twelve Months

Give Inc Authority its due. Buy a formation package and the agent seat is covered for you free of charge through year one. We looked for the catches these offers usually carry, an activation fee, a term that turns out shorter than the headline, a clause reclaiming the value if you leave, and none of them were stated. A new business gets a required service for nothing during the year it has the least money. That is a genuine benefit.

The Renewal Is the Missing Piece

Now the gap. Inc Authority does not publish what agent service costs after the free year. We spent time on their site in July 2026 doing exactly this, working through the packages page, the home page, and the FAQ section in search of a renewal rate, and it is not stated in any of them. Judging by how this market usually behaves, the number appears when you reach the order form or when you ask a representative on the phone.

We could fill that blank with a plausible guess. We are not going to, because the point of the page collapses if we do. The structural problem stands on its own anyway. Your Maine LLC needs an agent for as long as it exists, which makes the renewal the true cost of the arrangement, and an unreadable renewal leaves the comparison unfinished.

Both of Our Numbers Are Already Written Down

$99 now, $99 later, and neither one waits for a phone call. Around the price: documents served on our Maine office scanned and posted the same business day, an email the moment that happens, a public agent line carrying our street address so yours never appears there, and a reminder in advance of the June 1 annual report. If you want ordinary business mail scanned as well, it is $15 an item, and that is the only optional charge in the whole account.

Lowest in the state? No. BetterLegal advertises $90. We sit among the lowest flat annual rates Maine has, and the difference that matters on this particular page is not nine dollars anyway. It is that both of our years are readable today.

Switching Off Inc Authority: The Complete Maine Procedure

Maine has not digitized this one, so it is a paper filing, but it is not a difficult one.

The document is Form CLK/RA 3. You will notice the word clerk on it: Maine's corporate statutes kept that term for a domestic corporation's agent, and the state would rather issue a single sheet good for every entity type than two that nearly duplicate each other.

Its boxes want the entity name, the charter number, and the name and Maine address of whoever is taking over. A signature is required too, from somebody the LLC actually authorized, and 31 M.R.S. § 1676 puts that signature under penalty of false swearing, so this is not paperwork to hand to whoever is standing nearest the printer.

Mail it with $35 to the Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, care of the Maine Secretary of State. If you want it moving faster, the state sells $50 next-day handling and $100 same-day handling.

Now the sequencing, which is where free service tempts people into trouble. A free account feels disposable, so the instinct is to close it and then deal with the paperwork. Do the reverse. Inc Authority is your agent of record until the Division of Corporations enters the change, and the form cannot be completed without a successor named on it. So: sign with the replacement, mail the form, watch for the state record to update, and only then close the old account. Handled that way, an unquoted renewal never finds a date to post on, and your entity never spends a day without somebody to receive process.

Nothing about the filing is seasonal. Any business day inside the free year works, and going early beats going late. Our change of agent page walks the form.
